The recent conviction of former Prime Minister Imran Khan for corruption has been suspended on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, by a Pakistani high court.

Indeed, the former Pakistani Prime Minister was sentenced to three years in prison on August 5 for illegally selling state gifts during his term from 2018 to 2022. He has been in prison since then. After his conviction, the country’s election commission banned him from running in elections for a period of five years.

The suspension of the sentence does not guarantee that Imran Khan will be allowed to be released from prison, nor that he will be allowed to participate in the national elections scheduled for the end of the year, which will likely be delayed by several months.

As a reminder, after being ousted from power by a vote of no confidence in April 2022, Imran Khan was convicted of corruption. Upon his arrest, he was moved to a prison in Attock, about 60 kilometers from the capital Islamabad.
