Many believe that the current President, Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani, who has led the country since 2019, is the favorite in this electoral race, particularly following the strong majority secured by his party in the legislative elections, with 107 out of the 176 seats at stake.

At this stage, eight opposition figures have expressed their intention to enter the 2024 presidential race. During a recent press conference, representatives of the party of the previous president, Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz, explicitly voiced their support for his candidacy, claiming he represents the ideal choice to “lift the country from its current situation.”

Similarly, Biram Dah Abeid, who finished in second place in the previous election, has expressed his ambition to once again run for the country’s highest office in the next presidential election.
