Beaten by Japan (0-5) in their opening match, Zambia had to say goodbye to their journey at the 2023 Women’s World Cup after their defeat against Spain (0-5) on Wednesday, during the second matchday.

After suffering a heavy defeat against Japan (0-5) in their opening game, Zambia faced another loss on Wednesday at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, this time against the Spanish national team. La Roja women’s team completely dominated the game, defeating the bronze medalists from the last AFCON with an overwhelming score of 5-0. Facing a powerless Zambian side, the Spanish team did not have to exert much effort to secure the three points of victory.

Teresa Abelleira opened the scoring in the 9th minute, followed by a goal from Jennifer Hermoso in the 13th minute. Alba Redondo extended the lead in the 69th minute, before assisting Hermoso for another goal one minute later. Towards the end of the match, Redondo completed the scoreline at 5-0 (85th minute). Despite a few attempts, Zambia was not very threatening, managing only 2 shots on target out of 10 attempts.

Having been eliminated after two consecutive defeats, Zambia will try to salvage their pride in their next match against Costa Rica. The challenges faced by the Chipolopolos Ladies, including allegations of sexual harassment against their coach and issues of unpaid bonuses, might have contributed to their poor performance, conceding 10 goals in just two matches. The players and the Zambian Football Federation will have to provide explanations for their dismal performance.
