Wine is a beverage that dates back to ancient times. This fermented drink, made from grapes or fresh grape juice, has been present on dining tables from the most ordinary days to the grandest celebrations! Wine has always been a part of our daily lives in one way or another. Each person has their own preferences when it comes to the origin of wine and how it is enjoyed. However, do you know the different types of bottles that exist and what they are called?
Wine professionals may already be familiar with the names of all the wine bottles, but we would still like to give a little reminder for those who are less experienced.
Aside from the standard size of wine bottles, there are various other smaller and larger sizes. And each bottle has a distinct name.
The Different Types of Bottles and Their Respective Names
We have the Piccolo (meaning “small” in Italian), which is the smallest bottle. It is also known as the Quart, as it contains a quarter of a standard wine bottle and serves 1.5 glasses of wine.
Next is the Chopine (a quarter of a liter), which should not be confused with the Quart. It serves 2 glasses of wine.
Then we have the Fillette (half a wine bottle), also known as the Demi. It serves 3 glasses of wine.
And finally, the iconic bottle: the wine bottle. It is the standard reference for bottle sizes, the one you are most familiar with and commonly enjoy. This bottle, as you already know, contains 75 cl and can serve 6 glasses of wine.
We also have the Magnum, Jéroboam, Réhoboam, and Mathusalem… which are larger sizes.
