Poland wishes to protect its eastern border with Belarus, an ally of Moscow, in a “deterrent” capacity, announced the Polish Defense Minister on Thursday. This is why the country plans to deploy around 10,000 soldiers to its border with Belarus.
Poland intends to deploy around 10,000 soldiers in the long run to protect its border with Belarus, which is an ally of Russia. Among them, “4,000 will be directly involved in supporting border police operations, and another 6,000 will be reinforcements,” detailed the Defense Minister on public radio.
The minister had announced on Wednesday the dispatch of 2,000 personnel to the area. Poland is concerned about the presence of the Wagner Group in Belarus and accuses Minsk and Moscow of orchestrating a new influx of migrants to destabilize the region.
As part of its counteroffensive, which has so far only allowed the recapture of a handful of villages, the Ukrainian army claimed “partial success” in certain sectors on Wednesday, while Russian forces continue their assault near Kupiansk in the northeast. Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu, in a speech to military officials, mentioned the “multiplication” of “threats to military security” at the Russian borders, citing the “indirect war” of Western powers against Russia via Ukraine.
