Russian President Vladimir Putin stated on Tuesday that his former American counterpart, Donald Trump, is a victim of “political persecution” due to his candidacy in the 2024 U.S. presidential election against Joe Biden.
“This is politically motivated persecution by his competitor,” said the Russian President during an economic forum in Vladivostok, Russia, suggesting that it demonstrates “the perversion of the American system.” Donald Trump faces numerous legal issues in the United States, where he is suspected of election interference during the 2020 presidential election, suspicious payments to a former adult film actress, and negligent handling of confidential documents after leaving the White House. The former U.S. President has characterized these legal actions as politically motivated.
Vladimir Putin, who denies allegations of a close relationship between the former U.S. President and Russia, also stated that he does not expect a change in policy toward the Kremlin, regardless of the winner of the upcoming U.S. presidential election. “I don’t think there will be any fundamental changes in the direction of U.S. foreign policy towards Russia, no matter who is elected president,” he said, accusing U.S. authorities of fostering “anti-Russian sentiment in American society.”
