On Tuesday, August 29th, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated that Vladimir Putin would not attend the funeral of the head of Wagner Group. The Russian president considered him a traitor since his failed rebellion attempt in June, the Kremlin announced on Tuesday, August 29th.

The ceremony for the leader of Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, who was killed in a plane crash, was held privately, his company announced on Tuesday, August 29th, inviting those who wished to “bid him farewell” at a cemetery in Saint Petersburg. “The farewell to Yevgeny Viktorovich took place in private. Those who wish to bid farewell can go to Porokhovskoye Cemetery,” his company, Concord, stated on Telegram. It was not immediately clear whether the head of Wagner Group had already been buried.

This marks Concord’s first message since Wagner’s failed rebellion against the Russian military leadership in late June, which had made Yevgeny Prigozhin an enemy of the regime. The funeral of Valery Chekalov, one of Prigozhin’s associates, also took place on Tuesday. The Kremlin had earlier announced that President Vladimir Putin did not plan to attend Yevgeny Prigozhin’s funeral, as he had labeled him a “traitor” during his mutiny.
