Tottenham Hotspur owner, Joe Lewis, has been charged in the United States with orchestrating a “bold insider trading scheme.”

Prosecutors in New York accuse the billionaire of providing non-public information about companies he had business ties with to friends, associates, and employees, enabling them to profit from related stock trading, according to the indictment.

According to the British executive’s lawyer, his client made a “blatant error in judgment.” However, the charges will be “vigorously defended in court,” reassured David Zornow. He added that the 86-year-old voluntarily came to the United States to defend himself against the “misconceived charges.” Joe Lewis typically resides in the Bahamas.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Tottenham Hotspur said that the charges against the owner of the London-based team have no impact on the club: “This is a legal matter unrelated to the club, and as such, we have no comment.” Last October, Spurs filed paperwork with Companies House confirming that Lewis was, according to the club, “no longer a person of significant control over the club.”

Joe Lewis has been indicted on 16 counts of securities fraud and three counts of conspiracy for actions that allegedly took place between 2013 and 2021.
