Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter and his wife Rosalynn Carter don’t have much time left before passing away. This is reported by their grandson Josh Carter in an interview with People magazine this Saturday.
Jimmy Carter is the oldest living former U.S. President (1977-1981). He is now 98 years old. Since February, he has been under “palliative care” at his home, where he wants to “spend the time he has left” after a series of hospitalizations. Three months later, his family announced that his wife, Rosalynn Carter, was suffering from dementia.
In an interview with People magazine on Saturday, August 19, their grandson Josh Carter stated that Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter are in the “final chapter” of their lives. He said his grandfather is “still fully Jimmy Carter. He’s just tired.” His grandmother still recognizes them. She can still, according to him, “create new memories.”
According to Josh Carter, it’s difficult for his grandfather to see his wife struggling with dementia. “But on the other hand, they’ve lived together through all possible experiences.” For him, “what’s really beautiful is that they’re still together. They still hold hands… It’s simply extraordinary.”
After marrying Rosalynn in 1946, J. Carter served in the U.S. Navy before becoming the governor of Georgia in 1971. He became the 39th President of the United States in 1976 by defeating Gerald Ford. Mrs. Carter, considered an influential First Lady, was often nicknamed the “Steel Magnolia,” referring to her strength and determination. She could influence her husband’s opinions. “I know I have influence and I like it, I’m in the line of history,” she said, as recalled by Cnews.
