Former US President Donald Trump was indicted on Tuesday, August 1st, for his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election, according to the indictment.

Donald Trump was indicted on Tuesday, August 1st, for his attempts to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election. Several charges, including “conspiracy against the United States,” obstruction of an official proceeding, and interference with voting rights were brought after an investigation supervised by Special Counsel Jack Smith. This is the most serious charge against the former president, who is already facing two other criminal prosecutions.

“Despite his defeat, the accused was determined to stay in power. Therefore, for over two months after the November 3, 2020, election, the accused spread lies that there had been fraud that changed the result and that he had actually won,” states the indictment, obtained by AFP and published by several US media outlets, including The New York Times. “These allegations were false, and the defendant knew they were false,” it reads. “But he repeated them and widely disseminated them nonetheless.”
