In the United Kingdom, a Nigerian-origin doctor has lost custody of his 16-year-old son following a court decision related to an incident of corporal punishment.
A Nigerian man based in Great Britain has lost custody of his 16-year-old son due to a violence-related issue. The verdict was delivered by the court after the teenager was whipped with a belt by his father, triggering strong reactions from child rights advocates.
The incident occurred after the doctor caught his son watching an inappropriate video with his friends while they were heading home for a sleepover. Overcome by anger and frustration, the father resorted to a controversial disciplinary method by whipping his son with a belt. The boy’s friends, who witnessed the scene, alerted the authorities, leading to immediate police involvement.
Following the incident, a child rights advocate became involved in the case and appeared in court to express concerns about the well-being of the young boy. According to the advocate, the son told the court that his father regularly whipped him and forced him to choose a career that did not align with his aspirations.
Taking the boy’s testimony into consideration, the court concluded that the safety and well-being of the teenager were at risk under the care of his biological parents. As a result, the court made a difficult but necessary decision to separate him from both of his biological parents. The boy will now be under the care of the British government, ensuring that he receives the necessary support and guidance for his future development.
