Once again, the “kpayo” fuel has caused a tragedy in Cotonou, claiming the life of a person on Wednesday, January 10, 2024.
The adulterated gasoline struck again in the early morning of Wednesday, January 10, 2024. According to reports from Radio Bip FM, a vehicle loaded with gasoline cans was hit by a truck and caught fire. The driver of the gasoline-laden vehicle, who was alone in the vehicle, did not survive. He died in the blaze. “It was 05:05 in the morning on Wednesday when the vehicle loaded with gasoline cans caught fire between the La Vie intersection and the street called Funaï here,” said a resident interviewed at the scene by Bip radio.
The firefighters took hours to extinguish the flames. The police worked to clear the wreckage of the vehicle from the scene.
This unfortunate event comes after an equally devastating incident in September 2023, where over thirty lives were lost in a fire at a warehouse in Sèmè-Kraké, located in the Ouémé department.
The persistence of such tragedies underscores the urgent need to take measures to tackle the proliferation of adulterated fuel and strengthen safety regulations to protect the lives and property of citizens.
