In Togo, the recently launched “Traffic Light Operation” by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection is already yielding results. After just one week, the national police announce that they have apprehended more than 3,000 motorcycles.
Faced with a grim series of road accidents resulting in over 282 deaths and 4,611 injuries in the first half of 2023, the Togolese Ministry of Security and Civil Protection initiated a proactive response. The initiative, named “Traffic Light Operation,” was launched on July 31st with the aim of addressing this concerning reality. Since its deployment, the operation has already shown tangible signs of progress.
In just one week of implementation, the police forces have reported significant results. Notably, 3,198 motorcycles, 138 tricycles, and 730 cars have been apprehended as part of this campaign. While the violation related to disregarding traffic lights remains a central point of this initiative, it also encompasses crucial aspects such as checking mirrors, turn signals on two-wheeled vehicles, and other measures aimed at discouraging reckless behavior.
The inspection of mirrors has led to the identification of 773 motorcycles and 5 cars that do not meet the required standards. The police authorities have indicated that this initial phase is part of a broader approach. The coming days will see an intensification of enforcement efforts, a testament to the ministry’s steadfast commitment to road safety and citizen protection.
