Tuesday, September 5, 2023, marked the return of Togolese parliamentarians to the National Assembly after a two-month break. This session, known as the budget session, witnessed several significant events, including the inaugural speech by Yawa Djigbodi Tsègan, President of the National Assembly.
The event gathered a multitude of distinguished personalities, including the Minister in charge of relations with Republic institutions, former Presidents of the National Assembly, heads of Republic institutions, former Prime Ministers, government members, members of the diplomatic and consular corps, representatives from international organizations, as well as political, administrative, military, traditional, and religious authorities. The presence of these eminent guests added a special solemnity to the event.
In her opening speech, Madame Yawa Djigbodi Tsègan, President of the National Assembly, highlighted Togo’s encouraging macroeconomic prospects. She emphasized the consolidation of economic growth and a climate of stability and security conducive to the modernization and development of the country. However, she also stressed the need to maintain efforts to improve public finances and enhance the business environment to achieve sustained economic growth.
The budget session, primarily dedicated to the examination and adoption of the 2024 budget law, holds particular significance for Togo’s future. Deputies will be responsible for deliberating on several bills of great importance to the Togolese nation, with 13 awaiting consideration in the National Assembly.
Key highlights of this session include the government’s commitment to further economic growth consolidation, with a focus on job creation and improving the well-being of the population. Additionally, the National Assembly will address critical reforms aimed at boosting investment, enhancing transparency, and ensuring good governance.
