After three days of prayers and worship in solidarity with Niger, the Episcopal Conference of Togo has issued a call for the lifting of sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) against Niger.
Under the leadership of Bishop Benoît ALOWONOU, Bishop of Kpalimé and President of the Episcopal Conference of Togo (CET), the bishops of Togo have made an appeal for the lifting of sanctions imposed by ECOWAS against Niger. In a public statement, the bishops have urged political decision-makers in the sub-region to prioritize dialogue and mediation to resolve the current crisis in Niger.
In their declaration, the CET emphasizes the importance of solidarity among West African nations and highlights the interconnected consequences of political and security troubles in the region. The bishops underscore that civilian populations, particularly women and children, are the primary victims of sanctions and conflicts. Therefore, they call upon political leaders to pursue the diplomatic path of negotiation and dialogue to achieve a peaceful resolution of the crisis.
The CET also commends the efforts of countries, including Togo, as well as political leaders and civil society in the sub-region, who have promoted dialogue and wisdom in managing delicate political situations.
It is worth noting that this call comes after three days of a triduum to implore divine mercy and peace for the neighboring country, Niger. At the end of three days of prayers and worship, the bishops reaffirmed their solidarity with the people of Niger and expressed their hope for a swift return to calm and stability.
