The Togolese Armed Forces (FAT) neutralized a group of presumed terrorists in a firefight in the northern region of the country, known as the savannas.
On Friday, August 18, 2023, at dawn, an incursion of militants was reported in the village of Tchimouri, located in the Pognon commune, Kpendjal district. The group was attempting to seize local livestock but was quickly met with the determination of the security forces.
The terrorist elements were cornered by a FAT attack helicopter, according to local media reports. During the ensuing firefight, several members of the group were incapacitated, thus putting an end to their attempted criminal activities. This operational success is the result of meticulous preparation and the unwavering commitment of the Togolese security forces in their mission to protect citizens and the territory.
It is worth recalling that the savannas region in Togo faces a constant threat from jihadist groups. Aware of this security reality, the competent authorities have taken bold measures to enhance security in the region. This determination was manifested by the declaration of a security emergency on June 13, 2022, marking the beginning of a period of intensified security operations aimed at countering the terrorist threat.
