Togo is supporting access to humanitarian aid for the people of Niger in response to a request from the United Nations. This initiative comes a few weeks after a request was made by the United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator to ECOWAS.
In a recent communication addressed to all ECOWAS member countries, the United Nations official emphasized the importance of providing humanitarian assistance to Nigeriens who have faced increased difficulties following economic sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, in response to the coup that ousted President Mohamed Bazoum.
In response to the communication, Togo has made a favorable decision regarding Niger. In its response to the United Nations Under-Secretary-General, Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, the Togolese Minister of Foreign Affairs expressed the readiness of Togo’s competent authorities to facilitate the mission of United Nations humanitarian agencies working to provide vital assistance to the people of Niger.
“I have the honor to inform you that the Togolese Government, having carefully examined the said request in light of the provisions of Article 44 of Additional Act A/SP 12/2/12 of February 17, 2012, has decided to respond favorably in the interest of the fraternal people of Niger and our community,” reads the letter signed by Minister Dussey.
