During the first half of 2023, Togo recorded more than 23 cases of armed robberies, according to the semi-annual report released by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, Yark Damehame.
Togo is facing persistent challenges in terms of internal security during the first half of 2023, as highlighted by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection in a recent presentation of statistics concerning crime and road accidents in the country.
The figures reveal a series of concerning incidents that have had devastating consequences for some victims. During this period, the country experienced 23 armed robberies, a scourge that has spread across the entire territory. These criminal acts resulted in financial losses estimated at over 89,455,600 CFA francs and claimed the lives of three people while injuring ten others.
In parallel, five armed robberies were recorded, causing significant material losses amounting to over 6,433,000 CFA francs, along with losses in foreign currency and property such as laptops and smartphones.
Insecurity is also marked by an increase in homicides, murders, lynchings, and suspicious deaths, with a total of 68 cases reported during the first half of 2023. This alarming trend raises questions about the underlying factors contributing to this violence.
Faced with these persistent challenges, the Togolese authorities must redouble their efforts to ensure the safety of citizens. This entails enhanced cooperation among security forces, in-depth analysis of the root causes of crime, and effective public policies to prevent and combat criminal acts.
