On August 2, 2023, experts from the educational sector in Togo and representatives of civil society validated an ambitious plan aimed at revolutionizing education in Togo through Open Educational Resources (OER).
OER refers to learning, teaching, and research materials in all forms and formats that are either in the public domain or protected by copyright but published under an open license. Their introduction represents a decisive step towards a more accessible, dynamic, and equitable education for all.
The National Commission of UNESCO initiated this workshop as part of the “Open Educational Resources (OER)” project, which is led by UNESCO and financed with valuable support from the French Development Agency (AFD). This collaboration between local stakeholders and international partners demonstrates the collective commitment to education and sustainable development in Togo.
The strategic document validated during the workshop encompasses several crucial aspects for the success of the project. The production aspect involves all the resources needed to create these open educational textbooks, thereby placing the country at the heart of the development of its own knowledge. The integration aspect aims to seamlessly integrate these new resources into the educational system, thus facilitating their effective adoption by teachers and students.
The pedagogical approach, a fundamental pillar of this strategy, reimagines the way of teaching and learning, leveraging the flexibility and richness of OER. Open resources open up new avenues for a more participatory, interactive, and relevant education for the challenges of the 21st century.
Once produced and integrated, these open educational resources should be made available to all without financial or technical barriers, ensuring an equal and inclusive education.
