The Port of Lomé ranks among the top 5 most efficient container ports in Africa, according to the latest report by the World Bank and S&P Global Market Intelligence.
In the relentless pursuit of development and modernization of infrastructure, the Port of Lomé emerges as a rising star in Togo. Through a series of ambitious reforms, this major hub has undergone a spectacular transformation, propelling it into the very exclusive circle of the top five most efficient ports in Africa and even within the top 100 worldwide.
At the heart of this transformation lies a digital revolution that redefines the way port activities are conducted. The Port of Lomé has adopted a technology-driven approach, enabling economic operators to carry out their operations with a simple click. Invoices, entry tickets, cargo clearance procedures – everything can be accomplished without physical presence. This initiative has not only sped up processes but also redefined efficiency and simplicity in the port landscape.
The bold reforms have yielded tangible results. Container processing times destined for Togo have been reduced from 13.4 to 11.45 days. Similarly, transit container processing times have decreased from 16.95 to 15.5 days. The inauguration of the Lomé Container Terminal (LCT) in 2022, an investment of 33 billion CFA francs, was a major milestone, further propelling the port towards excellence.
According to recent statistics, overall cargo traffic has surged by 62.55%, rising from 18,320,953 tons in 2018 to an impressive 29,771,988 tons in 2022. The port’s waters have also witnessed 1,662 vessels in 2022, demonstrating its central position in maritime trade.
As a reminder, the Port of Lomé (PAL) has recently acquired a fourth state-of-the-art tugboat as part of a strategic partnership with the Spanish company Boluda. This acquisition reflects an unwavering commitment to continuous growth and positions the port for even greater achievements.
