Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira, the new World Bank Director of Operations for Togo, conducted a visit to Lomé starting from Wednesday, July 18, 2022. During her visit, she met with Togolese President Faure Gnassingbé over the last weekend to discuss the partnership between the World Bank and the country.
Throughout her stay in Lomé, Director Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira met with President Faure Gnassingbé to discuss the ongoing partnership between Togo and the international financial institution, as well as to prepare a new framework of collaboration that will shape the future of development in the country.
“The efforts made by Togo are significant and evident on the ground. I am delighted with the excellence of this partnership,” stated Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira after her meetings with the President. This declaration highlights the willingness of both parties to strengthen their cooperation with the aim of implementing concrete development projects and improving the quality of life for the Togolese population.
One of the important steps of this visit was a field visit to the commune of Aného, located 40 km from Lomé. There, the Director was able to witness the achievements of the West Africa Coastal Areas Investment Resilience Project (Waca ResIP). This project aims to counter coastal erosion and reduce the vulnerability of local communities to the effects of climate change.
In Aného, Marie-Chantal Uwanyiligira received a warm welcome from the residents, who expressed their gratitude for the World Bank’s efforts in implementing this essential project for their community. The measures put in place have protected the lands and homes from the ravages of coastal erosion, ensuring a safer and more resilient future for future generations.
In addition to the visit, the Director also discussed the preparation of a new partnership strategy between the World Bank Group and Togo. This new approach underscores the financial institution’s commitment to supporting the national priorities defined by the Togolese government in its Roadmap.
