The President of the Togolese Republic, Faure Gnassingbé, held a meeting with General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at the Presidential Palace.

General Michael Langley, Commander of the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM), began a working visit to Lomé, Togo, on Wednesday, marking a new chapter in strengthening the security partnership between the two nations. During his meeting with the Togolese President, strategic discussions were initiated, with a focus on the joint fight against violent extremism in the West African sub-region and the northern part of Togo.

Commander Langley emphasized the importance of shared values between Togo and the United States regarding security, stability, and prosperity. The two leaders explored mechanisms to enhance their partnership in promoting these essential values in the region.

Among the topics discussed, the maritime sector was particularly highlighted. General Langley expressed admiration for the exemplary work done by Togo in securing its coasts. In this regard, both parties discussed the opportunity to cooperate in expanding Togo’s capabilities in this crucial area, thereby protecting maritime interests and strengthening regional security.

On his part, the Togolese President expressed gratitude to the United States for their commitment to working together in building a safer future for West Africa. He also emphasized the importance of international cooperation in the fight against terrorism and violent extremism, stating that Togo is determined to play an active role in seeking regional solutions.

As a reminder, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) was established in 2007 and plays a key role as a unified command for Africa. It coordinates all U.S. military and security activities on the continent, thus contributing to the promotion of peace and security in the region.
