The Golfe 1 Municipality has announced the upcoming closure of the Bè-Kpota cemetery starting from Saturday, September 2, 2023, due to unprecedented saturation.
The Mayor of the Golfe 1 Municipality, Joseph Gomado, recently announced that the Bè-Kpota cemetery will no longer accept new bodies for burial from Saturday, September 2, 2023. This decision comes as a result of the cemetery’s observed saturation, with no more available spaces for new graves.
According to the official statement, the current situation at the Bè-Kpota municipal cemetery cannot accommodate additional burials. As a result, the population is urged to consider other cemeteries in the Greater Lomé area for future burials.
This announcement follows a previous communication dated July 17, 2023, where a uniform pricing policy of 120,000 FCFA for grave acquisition was introduced. The aim of this pricing was to standardize burial costs at the Bè-Kpota cemetery.
This new measure will undoubtedly have a significant impact on the community, which will need to adapt to this change. It remains to be seen how other cemeteries in the Greater Lomé area will manage the sudden increase in burial requests.
