In Africa, unfounded allegations and suspicions of witchcraft against elderly individuals persist alarmingly. A recent incident in Togo has escalated tensions and ignited passionate debates, evoking a mix of anger and indignation within society.
In a viral video, a man can be seen severely beating an elderly woman, her hair white, seated on the ground. He accuses the woman of practicing witchcraft on a deceased family member. As he administers repeated slaps to the woman, the voice of another man can be heard also supporting these allegations of witchcraft against her.
Spreading like wildfire, the video has sparked passionate debates among internet users and has even prompted reactions from several prominent figures in the country.
Indeed, Deputy Gérard Taama has volunteered to file a complaint against the perpetrators of this act to ensure justice is served for the woman. “Find me the identities of these two cowards attacking an elderly woman. Together, we must identify the perpetrators of this barbaric act. So that justice can be pursued and the perpetrators of these cruel abuses can be held accountable,” he stated.
On his part, Mathieu Gnassingbé expressed his indignation over such an act in a post on his Facebook page before urging the prosecutor to take up the case. In the latest updates, the relevant authorities have already launched an investigation to apprehend the perpetrators of this act.
