As part of the implementation of the project known as the “African Continental Free Trade Area” (AfCFTA), Togo and Ghana have decided to strengthen their trade relations. The trade authorities of both countries gathered in Lomé on Tuesday, August 22nd, to discuss measures to maximize the opportunities presented by this continental initiative.

The primary objective of this meeting was to find solutions to the challenges that hinder trade between the two nations, particularly issues related to customs formalities that complicate cross-border trade. Participants also examined matters concerning trade within the AfCFTA, while discussing the benefits of the pan-African payment and settlement system.

This meeting allowed the two countries to express their commitment to removing physical trade barriers, thus laying the foundation for enhanced cooperation and collaboration. “Even without major constraints, exchanges between Accra and Lomé are possible. We just need to establish trade rules, simplify customs procedures, reduce trade-related costs, and address infrastructure issues,” emphasized Koffi Mensah Demitia, the Ambassador of Ghana to Togo.
