A Togolese citizen has recently taken legal action before the ECOWAS Court of Justice, demanding the resumption of voter registration operations in Zone 1 of Togo.
While the CENI (Independent National Electoral Commission) has recently displayed the provisional voter lists after finalizing the data processing resulting from the voter registration operation, a visibly dissatisfied citizen with the process has filed a complaint before the ECOWAS Court of Justice. The plaintiff submitted her complaint on July 25th, accusing the Togolese state of violating citizens’ right to participate in the public affairs of their country, as reported by the media outlet Icilomé.
This information was revealed on Wednesday by the leaders of the “Dynamique pour la Majorité du Peuple” (Dynamic for the Majority of the People – DMP) during a press conference in Lomé. They expressed their support for the concerned citizen. The Coordinator of DMP, Ms. Adjamagbo-Johnson, emphasized that this action aims to denounce any attempt by officials of the Togolese Republic’s institutions to restrict citizens’ rights in terms of democratic participation.
The plaintiff, assisted by three lawyers, Mr. Darius Atsoo, Elom Kpade, and Raphaël Kpande-Adzare, specifically requests the resumption of voter registration operations for those who were unable to receive their voter cards. Her legal action highlights the importance of ensuring democratic access to voting rights for all citizens of the country, without discrimination or hindrance.
The case is now in the hands of the ECOWAS Court of Justice, which will examine the arguments presented by the plaintiff and the Togolese state.
As a reminder, preparations for the legislative and regional elections in Togo are ongoing. According to the law, the provisional voter lists were displayed in all Voter Registration Centers (CRVs) on Thursday, July 20th. After this phase, a 48-hour period was granted to the population for any potential challenges or disputes.
