In Togo, 282 people died, and 4,611 others were injured in road accidents during the first half of the year 2023.
The security report for the first half of 2023 in Togo was made available on Thursday, July 27, 2023. According to data provided by the Minister of Security and Civil Protection, General Yark Damehame, no fewer than 282 people lost their lives, and 4,611 others were injured in these tragedies that occurred on the country’s roads. While there has been a significant decrease compared to the last semesters of the previous year, the figures remain alarming, emphasizes the minister.
In total, 3,262 accidents were recorded during this period, which represents a decrease compared to the 3,818 accidents registered during the same period in 2022. However, the human toll of these accidents remains concerning and calls for collective awareness of the importance of road safety.
The report issued by the ministry reveals that motorcycle riders are particularly affected by these tragedies, accounting for 69% of the deaths recorded in the first half of 2023. Indeed, 195 motorcyclists lost their lives, followed closely by 45 pedestrians (representing 15% of the total deaths). Tricycle motorcycle riders are also among the victims, with 16 recorded deaths, accounting for 5% of the total number.
Faced with these alarming figures, Minister Yark Damehame emphasizes the urgency of taking specific measures to protect vulnerable road users. Motorcycle riders and pedestrians, being particularly exposed to risks, require special attention in accident prevention efforts.
