Deputy spokesperson of the Department of State, Vedant Patel, expressed enthusiasm regarding the confirmation of Ambassador FitzGibbon’s arrival in Niamey. “We are thrilled to see Ambassador FitzGibbon confirmed in late July, following a year-long confirmation process. And we look forward to her arrival in Niamey,” stated Mr. Patel. This appointment reflects the importance that the United States places on their diplomatic partnership with Niger and the promotion of democratic values in the region.

The role of Ambassador FitzGibbon holds particular significance in the current context of political transition in Niger. Following the ousting of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26, General Abdourahamane Tchiani self-declared as the head of a transitional government. The United States, on their part, maintain their stance in favor of a diplomatic solution that respects constitutional order in Niger. “We continue to advocate for a diplomatic solution that respects constitutional order in Niger and for the immediate release of President Bazoum and his family. And we remain committed to working with our African partners to promote security, stability, and democratic governance in the Sahel,” emphasized Mr. Patel.
