The public prosecutor’s office in Madrid has initiated an investigation against Luis Rubiales for alleged sexual assault on Spanish player Jennifer Hermoso, as reported by RMC Sport this Friday afternoon.

The president of the Spanish Football Federation has been at the center of a storm for several days. Luis Rubiales is under scrutiny for forcibly kissing Roja player Jenni Hermoso after the 2023 Women’s World Cup final. As voices call for Rubiales’ resignation, he announced on Friday that he is holding onto his position.

Given the course this matter is taking, the Spanish justice system has decided to get involved. The public prosecutor’s office in Madrid has launched an investigation into Luis Rubiales for alleged sexual assault this Friday. The provincial prosecutor’s office initiated the investigation and referred one of the allegations to the National Court after carefully examining the circumstances and determining that this instance is authorized to handle the case. It is now up to the prosecutor of the National Court to analyze the case and decide whether to accept the complaint or dismiss it.

The case brought before the CAS During a press conference on Friday, Victor Francos, the head of the CSD (equivalent to the Ministry of Sports in France) and Secretary of State for Sport, also announced a procedure against Rubiales before the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).

“The government is initiating the process for Rubiales to provide explanations before the Administrative Sports Tribunal. And if the CAS deems it appropriate, and if the CSD is able to do so, we will suspend Rubiales from the presidency of the RFEF,” he explains, as reported by RMC Sport.

He adds: “Today, we will submit a reasoned complaint to the CAS, so that it can assess whether what happened constitutes, as we believe, a serious offense. If the CAS rules in our favor in the coming days, we can evaluate at the CSD whether this very serious wrongdoing requires the suspension of Rubiales from his responsibilities,” indicating that the pressure is mounting against the president of the Spanish Football Federation.
