The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, has arrived in Addis Ababa for an official visit focused on strengthening ties between the United Arab Emirates and Ethiopia. Warmly welcomed at Addis Ababa’s Bole International Airport by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, this visit marks a significant step towards enhanced collaboration between the two countries.
At the heart of this diplomatic visit lies the goal of enhancing friendship and cooperation across various domains. The United Arab Emirates has emerged as a major trading partner for Ethiopia, with non-oil trade reaching $1.4 billion in 2022.
Importations from Ethiopia to the United Arab Emirates totaled $628 million, while Emirati exports reached $564.5 million. Re-exports from the United Arab Emirates to Ethiopia have also contributed significantly to this dynamic, amounting to $553.3 million.
UAE investments in Ethiopia have also played a crucial role in strengthening economic ties between the two nations. With an estimated total of $2.9 billion, these investments have touched various key sectors such as pharmaceutical production, the aluminum industry, the agri-food sector, beverages, and chemicals. This close collaboration has fostered opportunities for mutual growth and economic development for both countries.
