The prestigious Kora Awards ceremony is making a grand comeback after a decade-long break. The announcement was made on the event’s Facebook page by the promoter, Ernest Adjovi.
African artists and those from the diaspora are thrilled by the news of the Kora Awards’ return. Just a few days ago, promoter Ernest Adjovi announced the grand return of the ceremony that honors African artists and those from the diaspora on the event’s page. He even took the opportunity to unveil the various categories in competition, namely “Best Male Artist – African Urban Music,” “Best Female Artist – African Urban Music,” “Best Artist/Group – African Gospel Music,” “Best Collaboration of the Year,” “Best Afro-Caribbean Artist/Group,” “Best Diaspora Afro-European Artist/Group,” “Best Influencer from the African Continent,” “Best Female Rap Artist,” “Best Music Video of the Year,” “Best Hit of the Year,” “Best African Web Comedian,” “Best Live Performance of the Year,” “Best Album of the Year,” “Best Afro-Latin American Artist/Group,” “Best Music Revelation of the Year,” and “Best Male Rap Artist.”
In each of these 17 categories, there are 40 nominated artists. However, these artists will be subject to voting by internet users. These votes are open until February 29, 2024, when the 20 finalists who will continue the journey and be present at the prestigious ceremony will be announced.
It should be noted that the country hosting the 2024 edition of the Kora Awards has not yet been revealed.
As a reminder, the last edition took place in 2012 in Côte d’Ivoire, where the late Arafat DJ was named the Best African Artist and Best Male Artist from West Africa. The Zouglou group Magic System was also honored as the Best Group in Africa. The Kora Awards were first established in 1994 in South Africa, with much of the evening’s festivities held at Sun City.
