The African Union has become a permanent member of the G20, announced the official spokesperson of the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, Arindam Bagchi.

“The African Union becomes a permanent member of the G20. A key outcome [of the summit],” Mr. Bagchi wrote on the X social network (formerly Twitter).

Earlier, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi invited the President of the African Union, Azali Assoumani of Comoros, to participate in the G20 summit in New Delhi as a permanent member.

Mr. Modi warmly welcomed President Assoumani after his opening speech. The head of the African Union took his place around the roundtable of the first session of the G20 summit, where a plaque with the inscription “African Union” was displayed.

The G20 summit in New Delhi opened on Saturday and will continue until September 10. Authorities from all G20 countries and nine other states (Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Nigeria, Netherlands, Oman, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and Spain) were also invited. The Russian delegation is led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.
