The mother of Luis Rubiales, the president of the Spanish Football Federation, who was suspended for forcibly kissing a player during Spain’s victory at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, has been hospitalized on Wednesday, the third day of her hunger strike.
Angeles Bejar, who had begun her protest against the treatment of her son inside the Divina Pastora church in the seaside town of Motril in the south of the country, was evacuated and taken to the hospital by emergency services, said Father Antonio Rodriguez to journalists.
“I have to tell you that she had a crisis and had to be urgently taken to the hospital. She’s no longer here,” said the priest, adding that Angeles Bejar was “tired, with many health problems, not just emotional stress.”
Rubiales’ mother had vowed to stay inside the church until Jenni Hermoso, the player kissed on the mouth by her son, “tells the truth” about what happened, a family member explained.
“This harassment is not fair. His mother, who is very religious, sought refuge in God. She began a hunger strike and doesn’t want to leave the church,” said her niece Vanessa Ruiz Bejar on Monday. When contacted by AFP, the Motril hospital did not confirm whether she had been admitted as a patient.
