The global gymnastics superstar Simone Biles triumphed in the women’s all-around competition at the U.S. Championships in San Jose on Sunday, August 27. This eighth national title in the all-around competition marked a record-breaking achievement.
The four-time Olympic champion electrified the audience with a stunning floor routine that earned her a score of 15.400 points, contributing to a total of 118.450 points. This eighth all-around national title allowed her to surpass Alfred Jochim’s record set in 1933. At 26 years old, she also became the oldest gymnast to win the national all-around competition, a decade after her first victory. Shi Jones, the 2022 world all-around silver medalist, came in second, trailing by 3.9 points.
This triumph follows Biles’ return after the Tokyo Olympics The American star had been leading since the first night of competition on Friday, during which she successfully executed a Yurchenko double pike vault—a skill so difficult that no other gymnast has ever performed it in competition.
Her victory on Sunday is the second consecutive win since her return from a two-year hiatus. Simone Biles had withdrawn from most of the events at the 2021 Tokyo Olympics due to mental health and safety concerns. The gymnast had explained that she suffered from “twisties,” a dangerous condition causing disorientation in the air, putting athletes at risk of injury upon landing.
