Frosinone’s goalkeeper Stefano Turati has received a one-match suspension in Serie A as a consequence of blasphemous remarks made during the team’s loss to Napoli (1-3) in the opening match of the 2023-2024 season. This disciplinary decision was announced by the Italian Football League this Tuesday.
After carefully reviewing the visual and audio recordings of the match between Frosinone and Napoli on the first matchday, the disciplinary committee concluded that Turati had used a clearly audible and recognizable blasphemous term, without any possibility of questioning this interpretation, according to the Italian League.
“As a result, he must be sanctioned as provided for in Article 37, paragraph 1 of the Code of Sporting Justice of the Italian Federation, with a one-match suspension,” the Italian League explained in a statement. Therefore, Frosinone’s goalkeeper has been handed a one-match suspension and will not participate in his team’s upcoming match.
There have been previous suspensions in Italy for the same reason. This rule in Serie A has been enforced on multiple occasions: first in 2018 for Rolando Mandragora when he played for Udinese, and then in 2021 for Manuel Lazzari of Lazio Rome, as well as for Gianluigi Buffon while he was with Juventus.
