Saudi Arabian club Al Hilal has officially announced the departure of Malian player Moussa Marega, who mutually terminated his contract with the Saudi Pro League team in order to make room for their new signings.
With their explosive summer transfer window, which included the arrivals of Kalidou Koulibaly, Rúben Neves, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, Malcom, Neymar, Yassine Bounou, and most recently Aleksandar Mitrovic, Al Hilal needed to free up spots to comply with the quota of foreign players allowed in the squad, which is limited to 7 players. The Saudi club decided to sacrifice Malian player Moussa Marega.
Although under contract with the Riyadh-based club until June 2024, the 32-year-old forward and his now former employers mutually agreed to terminate the last year of the striker’s contract. The deal was reportedly worth several million euros, which the player received as compensation.
In a post shared on their official Twitter account on Monday, Al Hilal confirmed Marega’s departure, thanking him for his two years of good and loyal service with the team.
Moussa Marega, who joined Al Hilal on a free transfer in the summer of 2021 after the end of his four-year contract with FC Porto, played 75 matches, scoring 72 goals and providing 32 assists. With the Saudi powerhouse, he won the FIFA Club World Cup, the AFC Champions League, the league title, the Supercup, the King’s Cup, and the Lusail Cup. “Thank you, Al Hilal. Thank you to all my teammates and everyone working at this club. Thank you to the Hilal fans. I will never forget you,” he posted on his official Twitter account.
