Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a controversial law on Monday, banning gender reassignment surgeries in Russia.
This law will prevent affected individuals from undergoing surgical interventions or receiving hormone prescriptions. Doctors have warned that the new legislation will restrict access to medical assistance.
Gender reassignment surgeries will only be allowed in cases of genital deformities. The proponents of the new legislation claim that it aims to protect cultural traditions and family values in the fight against “Western ideologies.”
Vladimir Putin is known for promoting rigid gender roles for men and women. The President staunchly advocates traditional values and has also enshrined in law that marriage can only be celebrated between a man and a woman.
