In an interview with Globo Esporte, Rodrygo Goes reflected on his transfer to Real Madrid. The Brazilian discussed the behind-the-scenes details of his move to the Merengues, revealing that his father had envisioned him joining Barcelona.
Rodrygo stated that he had a verbal agreement with Barcelona, who had progressed in negotiations with his former club Santos, and that his father was eager for him to sign with the Catalan team. However, the young forward had different plans in mind.
“Practically everything was settled with Barcelona, only signatures were missing. I asked my father, ‘Isn’t there anything from Real Madrid?’ There was nothing. I asked him to wait until the end of the week because I had a match. I said, ‘I’m going to break it and Real Madrid will notice me,'” Rodrygo recalled.
Facing Vitória, Rodrygo scored a hat-trick and provided an assist, prompting Real Madrid to call his father to discuss his transfer. “The next day, my father left without saying anything. He came back later, went straight into my room, and brought a Real Madrid jersey and a Barcelona jersey. He threw them at me and said, ‘Choose.’ I didn’t even think about it, it was Real Madrid.”
