Former President of the Constitutional Court, Professor Théodore Holo, was on Peace Fm on Sunday, August 20, where he shared his opinions on various current topics. During this appearance, the academic made proposals to Patrice Talon concerning the situation of political detainees.
The escalation of the socio-political atmosphere was one of the points discussed on Sunday by the former president of the Constitutional Court, Professor Théodore Holo, in the “From You to Us” program on Peace Fm. According to Professor Théodore Holo, the de-escalation is conditioned by the release of political prisoners.
“I think it should contribute because those who are in prison have friends, families. Sometimes families are disintegrated, this must be taken into account. And those who have families, sympathizers, take hostile positions against the power that creates these difficult conditions for their sons, brothers, or friends,” the academic revealed.
According to him, as long as these detained personalities are not released, their loved ones “will remain focused on the negative aspects in light of their daily experiences,” Théodore Holo shared.
For the preservation of peace, the former president of the Constitutional Court advocates for an amnesty law. According to him, it is absolutely necessary for the de-escalation of the situation that “people regain their freedom.”
To achieve this, the academic leans more towards the enactment of an amnesty law rather than a presidential pardon. “Amnesty is no longer recorded in the criminal record, while a pardon interrupts the execution of the sentence but does not erase the penalty, which remains recorded in the criminal record,” he nuanced.
Former Minister of Foreign Affairs under former President Nicéphore Soglo, Professor Théodore Holo succeeded the Dean Robert Dossou as the president of the Constitutional Court. He passed the torch to the current president of the party Union Progressiste Le Renouveau, Professor Joseph Djogbénou.
