The Luis Rubiales affair continues to generate reactions in Spain. It’s now the turn of Real Madrid to make a statement on the matter, through a press release published on its website this Friday.
The incident involving Luis Rubiales has undeniably created shockwaves. After facing intense media coverage following his non-consensual gesture towards Jennifer Hermoso during the celebrations of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, the Spanish leader took the opportunity to publicly apologize. However, he firmly reiterated his intention not to resign from his role as the president of the Spanish Football Federation. This position has sparked a wave of outrage in Spain.
Following several clubs, including FC Barcelona, Real Madrid has now issued a statement. “Following the intervention of the President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, Luis Rubiales, before the Extraordinary General Assembly held today, Real Madrid would like to make the following statement: Our club fully supports the decision taken by the President of the Consejo Superior de Deportes, Víctor Francos, who will immediately refer this matter to the Tribunal Administrativo del Deporte. Our club supports our women’s football team and reiterates its congratulations for the historic achievement of winning the World Cup, and will continue to work towards the development and growth of women’s football in our country,” writes the Casa Blanca.
Despite his refusal to resign, Luis Rubiales could indeed be removed from his position. Several procedures are already underway against him by Spanish authorities.
