On Monday, July 31, 2023, the Movement of Committed Elites for the Emancipation of Benin (Moele-Bénin) party held an extraordinary session of the National Political Bureau. After this meeting, the party made a surprising decision considering its usual emphasis on group discipline, especially in the context of party system reform.
Moele-Bénin party members are now free to participate in movements to encourage candidacy within the ruling coalition for the 2026 presidential election, pending the party’s official position. Unlike its usual practice, Moele-Bénin will not sanction members who engage in these actions, which are normally contrary to the principle of “group discipline.”
According to party officials, these initiatives to encourage candidacy are seen as primaries. Therefore, they authorize party members to “align themselves behind the potential declared or undeclared candidate of their choice, provided that the candidate is from the presidential coalition camp, while waiting for the party’s choice, to which all members will have to adhere in any case.”
Moele-Bénin Congress Coming Up From September 2 to 3, 2023, Moele-Bénin will hold its congress. According to information communicated during the extraordinary session, everything is ready for the successful conduct of the congress. The conclave will take place in Cotonou, at the Palais des Congrès.
Two themes have been chosen for the congress. The general theme is titled: “Moele-Bénin, resolutely on the move.” For the inaugural conference, discussions will revolve around the theme: “the reform of the party system in progress.”
