In southern Pakistan, a train derailed on Sunday, resulting in the death of at least 30 people. Authorities still fear that the death toll may rise.

At least 28 people were killed, and 45 others injured in the train derailment on Sunday in southern Pakistan, as announced by the Pakistani Minister of Railways. “According to the information we have so far, 28 passengers have been killed, and many others are injured,” stated Khawaja Saad Rafique to journalists, mentioning that at least 1000 people were on board the Hazara Express when it derailed.

“This is a really serious accident,” Khawaja Saad Rafique stated to the press, who initially reported 15 deaths. “Additional rescue teams have been sent to the site,” he added. Currently, the death toll has risen to 30 as rescuers have retrieved new bodies from the overturned carriages, as indicated by a government official.

Accidents and derailments are common on the country’s aging railway network, which has nearly 7500 kilometers of tracks and transports over 80 million passengers annually. The network, which was a source of pride for the British during the colonial era, still has tracks, junctions, and bridges dating back over 150 years, although modernization is underway as part of the massive China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
