During an interview with the club’s media on Monday, Gabonese striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang revealed the reasons that led him to join Olympique de Marseille this summer.
Ten years after leaving Saint-Etienne to join Borussia Dortmund, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang returned to Ligue 1 this summer. The Gabonese forward, released by Chelsea, signed with Olympique de Marseille until June 2026. After joining the club, Aubameyang spoke for the first time to explain the reasons that motivated him to make this choice.
“Why OM? Because it’s Marseille, quite simply. I need to find a stadium that vibrates. The club’s project is super interesting. We have seen it in recent seasons, OM is doing better and better. It’s the ideal continuation for my career. (…) I came here to work and show who I am,” PEA confided to the club’s media on Monday, as reported by RMC Sport.
He continues by mentioning his last experience at the iconic Stade Vélodrome, the home of OM. “I haven’t been back since the stadium was completed. I came back with Dortmund, but the stadium was still under renovation, so there was only part of the crowd. But since it’s finished, no. I won’t hide that I watched some YouTube videos, it gives me chills! (laughs),” he adds.
During his time at Dortmund (2013-2018), Arsenal (2018-2022), Barcelona (2022), and finally Chelsea (2022-2023), Aubameyang hasn’t had the opportunity to play at the Vélodrome since December 2013. At that time, the talented Gabonese striker left a strong impression in Marseille while representing Dortmund in the group stage of the Champions League. His team won with a score of 2-1.
