Just moments after the dismissal of Jorge Vida, the Spanish Football Federation announced the appointment of Montse Tomé as the coach of the women’s national team, La Roja.
“The Royal Spanish Football Federation has appointed Montse Tomé as the coach of the national women’s team, making her the first woman to hold this position in Spain. Tomé (Pola de Siero, 1982) has been serving as the assistant coach of Jorge Vilda’s team since 2018 and has emerged as a key figure in the growth of the national team. Tomé’s appointment aligns with the regeneration measures announced by President Pedro Rocha,” wrote the RFEF.
The Asturian will take office in September, becoming the first woman to hold this position. She will make her debut in the UEFA Nations League by facing Sweden and Switzerland. “On September 22nd, Spain will face Sweden (FIFA rankings leader) at home and will host Switzerland in Cordoba on the 26th of the same month. These are two very demanding matches against two opponents they have already faced in the World Cup, with both matches being resolved by the Spanish team’s victory,” explains the Federation in its publication.
Montse Tomé was a player until 2012, before embarking on a coaching training and focusing on her career as a coach. She already has an in-depth understanding of the Spanish national team’s locker room. It’s also worth noting that Montse Tomé has extensive experience with Spain’s excellent youth national team.
