Virgil Van Dijk is the new captain of Liverpool. He takes over the armband left vacant by Jordan Henderson after his departure for Al Ettifaq in Saudi Arabia. The Reds announced the news on Monday evening through a statement on their official website.
“Virgil van Dijk has been confirmed as the new captain of Liverpool FC, with Trent Alexander-Arnold appointed as vice-captain. The central defender – who also holds the same role for his country, the Netherlands – will take on the full-time captaincy after Jordan Henderson’s departure from the Reds. Additionally, the club can announce Alexander-Arnold as the deputy captain, succeeding James Milner,” explained the Merseyside club in its publication.
For the past five and a half years, Virgil Van Dijk has been an active member of the club. He possesses a natural charisma that makes him the obvious successor to Jordan Henderson. This mark of confidence is well-deserved for the 32-year-old player, who expressed his pride to the club’s media.
“[It’s] a truly proud day for me, for my wife, for my kids, my family. It’s been a special feeling and I can’t really describe it at this moment. But it’s something I’m really, really proud of. Obviously, being the captain of Holland was already such a huge honor, a moment of pride as well. But also being the captain of Liverpool Football Club is something I can’t really put into words at this stage. It’s just something that makes me very proud, and I’ll do everything in my power and what I can do to make everyone proud and happy with me and the football club,” he explained.
Since his arrival at Anfield in January 2018, Van Dijk has made 222 appearances in the colors of Liverpool. During this period, he has been a key figure in securing seven trophies, including the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, UEFA Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup, and the FA Community Shield.
