With André Onana’s departure to Manchester United for a fee of 50 million euros, Inter Milan had to find a new starting goalkeeper. And now it’s a done deal. The Lombard club officially announced the arrival of Yann Sommer on Monday evening.
“There are children who dream of becoming great attackers, while others are born to play in goal: Yann Sommer belongs to the second category. (…) Experience, leadership, and dedication: qualities that Sommer is ready to demonstrate even with the Nerazzurri. Welcome, Yann,” Inter wrote in a statement. The length of the player’s contract has not been specified.
The 34-year-old Swiss goalkeeper will be experiencing Italy for the first time in his career. Yann Sommer, born in Switzerland in 1988, has become a talented goalkeeper since a young age, inspired by his father and uncle. After playing in various youth clubs, he eventually joined FC Basel and won several titles. In 2014, he moved to Borussia Mönchengladbach in Germany, where he became an iconic player and shone in the Champions League.
In January 2023, he joined Bayern Munich and won his first Bundesliga championship. Last season, he set the record for saves in a Bundesliga match, reaching 19 against Bayern Munich. Apart from football, he’s passionate about music, cooking, architecture, and photography. With the Swiss national team, he has participated in several major competitions, including three World Cups and two European Championships.
Yann Sommer’s first words The new Inter Milan player is already excited to start wearing his new colors. “Inter is a massive club nationally and internationally, a club with a great tradition. Playing for such an important team is a new challenge for me and my career. I’m looking forward to playing at San Siro, enjoying the people, the atmosphere, and Milan. I’m happy to be here,” he declared to the official Nerazzurri website.
He adds, “I don’t have many expectations. I just want to play, measure myself against other players, other attackers, and play for Inter. Naturally with the hope of winning something. Everything will be new, and I can’t wait to start. My strong point? I’m a very explosive goalkeeper, I try to be brave and help the team, even by playing with my feet. I think that’s one of my best qualities. Inzaghi likes to build from the back, I’ve noticed that over the years, and it’s also my style. I like being an option for the team, I like playing against opponents who put pressure on me. I try to give confidence, to feel calm.”
