It was anticipated, and now it’s official. FC Barcelona announced on Friday the contract extension of their goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.
The news was unveiled through a statement on Barcelona’s website. “FC Barcelona and Ter Stegen have reached an agreement for the extension of the goalkeeper’s contract until June 30, 2028. The release clause is set at 500 million euros,” the statement published by the Blaugrana club read.
Joining the club on May 19, 2014, from Borussia Mönchengladbach, Marc-André ter Stegen won the hearts of Barcelona supporters with his passion and determination. His first appearance in the Blaugrana colors dates back to September 17, 2014, in a Champions League group stage match against APOEL Nicosia. Since that memorable day, he has proudly worn the Barça jersey in no less than 379 matches.
But it’s not only his longevity at the club that is impressive. Marc-André ter Stegen currently holds the fourth position on the list of goalkeepers with the most appearances in FC Barcelona’s history. With only eight matches separating the current goalkeeper from Ramallets’ iconic 387 matches, he could soon establish a new record. However, the podium is still dominated by Barça legends: Víctor Valdés in third place with 535 matches and Zubizarreta in second place with 410 matches.
Marc-André ter Stegen’s journey at FC Barcelona has been marked by undeniable successes. His on-field contribution has helped shape the modern history of the club. With five La Liga titles, five Copa del Rey triumphs, a memorable Champions League victory, three Spanish Super Cups, one UEFA Super Cup, and one FIFA Club World Cup, he has left an indelible mark in the annals of Barça’s history.
