It was announced, and now it’s official. After his departure from Olympique de Marseille this summer, Dimitri Payet will continue his career in Brazil. The French player has signed with Vasco da Gama this Thursday.
The Brazilian club announced the news through a statement published on its official website. “Vasco de Gama has agreed to bring in a super reinforcement for the 2023 season. It’s the attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet, former player of Olympique de Marseille. The Frenchman is the tenth signing by Gigante da Colina in this transfer window, strengthening the team of coach Ramón Díaz,” reads the publication from the carioca club.
Hailing from Saint-Pierre, Dimitri Payet started his professional career at Nantes. In the 2007/08 season, he made his debut at Saint-Étienne. Later in 2011, he chose to join Lille, where he played until 2013. That year, he made the move to Olympique de Marseille, where he established himself as a club idol and rose to the top of Europe’s assist leaders in his second season wearing the Marseille colors.
In 2015, he transferred to West Ham, where he stayed for two seasons and contributed to the French national team’s campaign in Euro 2016, making his presence felt throughout the tournament. Afterwards, he returned to Olympique de Marseille. During this second Marseille chapter, he made numerous appearances until the end of the season, accumulating a total of 326 matches, 78 goals, and 95 assists.
Dimitri Payet will now take on a new challenge. Vasco da Gama is struggling and currently stands in the second-to-last position in the Brazilian league after 18 matchdays.
