He recently revealed that he wasn’t planning to retire just yet, despite being 38 years old, and Mathieu Valbuena has now found a new club. The French player has signed with Apollon Limassol, who finished 5th in the Cypriot league last year.
After four seasons with Olympiacos in the Greek SuperLeague, Mathieu Valbuena is now set to experience a new championship. He has agreed to a one-season contract with his new team, as announced by Apollon Limassol through an official statement on their website.
“Apollon Football (Public) Ltd announces the completion of the acquisition of midfielder Mathieu Valbuena. Mathieu is the 14th French player to play for the blue and whites. The player has chosen to wear number 28. We welcome the player to the club and wish him much success with our team,” reads the publication from the Cypriot club.
Born on September 28, 1984, in Bruges, near Bordeaux, France, Mathieu Valbuena remains one of the iconic figures of Olympique de Marseille, having played in over 300 official matches across all competitions between 2006 and 2014. With OM, Valbuena achieved success by winning the French league title in 2010, as well as the Coupe de la Ligue three times consecutively in 2010, 2011, and 2012.
His journey then took him to Greece in 2019, following two seasons with Fenerbahçe. There, he added to his success by winning three consecutive Greek league titles in 2020, 2021, and 2022. His exceptional playmaking skills have shone in several major leagues, earning him the title of best passer in Ligue 1 in 2013, then in Russia in 2015, and finally in Greece in 2020.
On the international stage, he has been a valuable asset for the French national team, actively participating in major competitions such as the 2010 World Cup, Euro 2012, and the 2014 World Cup.
