In an interview granted to RFI and France 24 in New York during the United Nations General Assembly’s 78th session, Macky Sall, the President of Senegal, stated that Bola Tinubu, the Nigerian head of state who currently presides over ECOWAS, is engaged in “underground” discussions with the coup leaders in Niger.
During the 78th United Nations General Assembly held in New York, Macky Sall, the President of Senegal, granted an interview to RFI and France 24 in New York. Speaking about the situation in Niger, Macky Sall declared that a “military option should only be considered when all other avenues have truly been exhausted.” According to the Senegalese President, all the other neighboring countries of Niger “are fully prepared to play their part” in this military intervention.
However, the Senegalese head of state clarified that “Nigeria is doing everything to find a solution through diplomatic means.” He added, “Otherwise, we cannot continue to allow an elected president to be held captive in his own home [referring to Mohamed Bazoum]. So, there will have to be progress.”
Nearly two months after a coup d’état carried out by the military, who overthrew and continue to detain him, the deposed Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum has decided to seek relief from the West African justice system for his release and the restoration of constitutional order in the country. The petition filed with the Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) on September 18th cites “arbitrary arrest” and “violation of freedom of movement” of President Mohamed Bazoum, his wife Haziza, and his son Salem, who have been detained with him at the presidential palace since the coup on July 26th.
